Hockey at the Olympics
Hockey is a sport that has been contested at both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. The men’s ice hockey tournament was introduced at the 1920 Summer Olympics and was transferred permanently to the Winter Olympic Games program in 1924. The women’s ice hockey tournament was first held at the 1998 Winter Olympics. The ice hockey tournaments follow the rules of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and feature teams from various countries competing for medals. The most successful teams in ice hockey history are Canada, the Soviet Union/Russia and the United States. The field hockey tournament was introduced as a men’s competition at the 1908 Summer Olympics and has been held at every Summer Olympics since 1928, except for 1924. The women’s field hockey tournament was first held at the 1980 Summer Olympics. The field hockey tournaments follow the rules of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and feature teams from various continents competing for medals. The most successful teams in field hockey history are India, Pakistan and the Netherlands.
